As a preparation for combat, fencing is as old as the sword itself, and is only one of four sports to be included in every modern Olympic games since 1896.

Fencing uses three blade weapons: foil, sabre, and epee. Fencing athletes must have incredible footwork and accurate blade work to compete at an Olympic level.

Team GB have won nine fencing medals - eight silver and one gold, achieved by Gillian Sheen in the Women's individual foil even at Melbourne in 1956.
